Round 5 saw competitors lined up in the paddock at Zeltweg, qualifying was reduced in duration due to some technical issues with the circuit timing equipment. At the end of the 20 minute session it was a familiar scenario to find Craig's Chaparral 2F on pole with a quick 1:45.527, Ron lined up in P2 in the Ferrari with Mike and Tim filling out the second row in their Lola's. Göran and Matt lined up on the third row in their Chaparral 2D and 2F respectively, Simon and Pete were on the fourth row and Shawn and David rounded out the top 10.
At the green flag Ron made a strong start and had the inside line for Hella Kurve the field negotiated the first lap without incident Simon, Shawn and Stefan all gaining one position to run 6th, 8th, and 10th respectively. At the start of Lap 2 Craig used a good exit from the final turn to claim the inside running and move back past Ron as they braked for Hella Kurve. Matt also repassed Simon on this lap to move back into 6th. Lap 3 saw Shawn spin the Ferrari at Rindt curve with Pete, Stefan, and David all passing before he could get things pointed in the right direction again. Unfortunately for Shawn he only managed 2 more corners before he suffered transmission failure on the approach to Dr. Tiroch Kurve and retired.

Lap 5 saw David become the second driver to spin his Ferrari at the Rindt Kurve, this allowed Stefan to regain the position he had lost the lap before and sit 9th. Things quietened down for the next few laps however on lap 7 there were a couple of incidents that changed the running order. Tim was the first to run off the circuit spinning under brakes at the tricky off camber approach to the Schikane, he rejoined without loss of position though. Shortly after Matt ran out of track as he exited the Schikane and spun the Chaparral 2F, this allowed Simon, Pete to pass a second spin at the following Rindt Kurve saw Matt rejoin at the tail of the field with Stefan and David making their way by. Lap 9 saw the achilles of the Chaparral strike with Craig forced to retire from the lead at the Schikane with transmission failure.
This allowed Ron to move into the lead with the 2 Lola's of Mike and Tim in second and third, there was a 6 second gap between each of them, Göran had a comfortable margin over Simon who had Pete hunting him down in the Ferrari. On lap 12 Pete made his move using the extra horsepower of the Ferrari to pass Simon along the main straight, however it all went wrong at Hella Kurve when he ran wide over the blind crest and then spun, this allowed Simon back past and before the lap was complete Stefan had passed him also to move into 6th. Things settled down for a few laps until lap 14 when Ron experienced a temporary mechanical glitch that rendered the Ferrari without power, by the time he had sorted it out Mike was alongside and made the pass into the lead along the back straight.

Mike maintained the lead until lap 19 when he arrived at Dr. Tiroch Kurve to find a slow moving Lola and Matt stationary having spun the Chapparal, he opted to go around the outside on the grass and lost momentum, Ron had a clearer path when he arrived and superior corner exit speed allowed him to pass Mike as they blasted down the back straight. The following lap Mike overcooked it into Dr. Tiroch Kurve to fall away from Ron, however at the end of the back straight Ron locked up the brakes and grazed the guard rail at Bosch Kurve this allowed Mike to make up the ground he had lost. These 2 drivers then put on a great battle to the chequered flag, with Ron faster at some key corners early in the lap but Mike braver into Bosch Kurve allowing him to put the pressure on over the final corners of each lap. After a thilling battle they crossed the line just .417 apart, the Scuderia were overjoyed to see a first win and some return after a tough result at Jerez. Tim took the final podium position finishing 16 seconds behind the front 2, Göran continued his run of good results but lonely races to take 4th 16 seconds behind Tim, Simon rounded out the top 5 after another strong run in the Porsche the last driver on the lead lap.
Fastet lap honours went to Craig with a 1:46.349, David was the races highest climber making up 4 positions, with Göran having the best laptime consistency over the race duration. Round 6 of the season is to be held at the tight and twisty Clermont circuit, this is a track that should favour the Porsche with its lighter weight and superior handling, see you all there.
